Surgical Oncology

WHAT IS SURGICAL ONCOLOGY?

It is the branch of Surgery that is responsible for the resection of a malignant tumor originating in the human body. Surgical Oncology is one of the pillars for the multimodal treatment of cancer. At Cancun Cancer Institute multimodal treatment is available, that is, the combination of the three Cancer treatments.

WHAT IS IT FOR?

Cancer surgery is responsible for removing cancer cells, either in the organ that gave rise to it, or in distant organs. The intention of the surgery can be in a curative or palliative context.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Surgical treatment is carried out under oncological principles. Survival has been shown to be increased in those patients who are operated on by an Oncologist Surgeon.

WHEN IS IT REQUIRED?

Oncological surgical treatment is indicated in patients with early clinical stage and locally advanced with curative intention. In metastatic stages it can be managed to improve patient conditions, avoid complications such as bleeding, perforation and occlusion; as well as for pain management.

WHO DOES IT?

The oncologist surgeon is a sub-specialist in charge of performing this type of procedure.

TREATMENT PLANNING

Once our multidisciplinary team of oncologists determines that it should be operated on, surgical treatment is scheduled after a preoperative evaluation.

HOW LONG DOES THE SURGERY LAST?

It is variable depending on the primary site, as well as the extent of the disease.

IF MY CANCER RETURNS, IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I CAN BE GIVEN SURGERY AGAIN?

The treatment is individualized. It is submitted to a consensus of oncology specialists. If it is determined as an option, the benefit of surgery is available as disease control even in recurrence.
